Artist Statement
D.K. Smith is an African American artist from North Carolina. At a young age, he began drawing and coloring but fell in love with photography and fashion around the age of 15 years old. Though he enjoys all forms of photography such as landscapes, documentary, and portraits, he quickly grew to find interest in fashion photography browsing through magazines, becoming intrigued with streetwear. He created his own clothing brand titled “VisualsbySkywalka”. Some of the artists that have had an impact on him, and his work are Tommy Ton, Bobby Hundreds, and Terry Richardson. He often lets the subjects be free, capturing candid photos all while showing off each subject’s unique sense of style. Smith prides himself on creating vivid, eye- catching photos with use of a lot of color and space. He takes trips throughout North Carolina, securing shots in cities such as Hickory and Charlotte. Smith’s work provides you with fashion magazine-like shots that also hints towards what type of upbringing each subject has had. The clothing in each photo are from the subject’s own closet, but they were directed to wear something that most reminds them of “home”. He calls this exhibition: “Home-Grown”.
